What started out as a local funfilled event in the Beajolais region over sixty years ago, on the third Thursday of the month of November at 12:01 French time, a twenty-four hour long celebration begins with midnight parades and parties. Today this party has become a world event and millions of bottles of the Beaujolais Nouveau will be opened similtaneously to celebrate the success of the the newly born 2013 vintage.
Although many wine writers dismiss this wine as being very commercial (and there is some truth to this), the Beaujolais Nouveau was intended to be nothing more than a fruity easy to drink wine to be served slightly cold in the Brasseries and Terrasse Cafés while waiting for the fuller in body Beaujolais Crus red wines to be released later. But here in the USA, the Beaujolais Nouveau can be a nice alternative to the heavy structured bold wines which can sometimes be too over powering in alcohol. The Gamay grape makes a light fruity wine that will go well with many dishes, even that Thanksgiving Turkey with all the trimmings!
With 18.000 hectares of Gamay (and a small quantity of Chardonnay for the whites) grapes planted between Macon and Lyon, this years harvest was very difficult. Because of the adverse weather condition last spring and a fairly cold month of June this summer and lots of rain and hailstorms during August, the harvest was launched at least two week later than last year’s (and six week later that the harvest of 2003)! Which mean that there isn’t as much Beaujolais Nouveau 2013 vintage being released. However, Mr. Jean Burgade, General Manager of the Interprofessional Inter-Beaujolais, is very happy with this year’s vintage which he says has lots of fruits flavors, pleasantly flowing and easy to drink.
